Whose room is this?
This is my son Chet’s nursery. I started decorating when I was about 20 weeks’ pregnant and it was confirmed he was a boy, however it has undergone many changes since then. Believe it or not, his room had a natural, white and baby blue colour scheme room prior to being monochrome.
Did you style Chet’s room with a particular theme in mind?
When it came to choosing a theme, I was finding so many amazing kids’ prints and decor that were black and white, so the room slowly took a monochrome twist. I don’t generally like to stick to one style or theme, but for Chet’s room I used colour (or the lack of) to create flow. It is predominantly black and white with raw natural textures like blonde wood, Icelandic sheep skin, leather and foliage to soften the monochrome aspect.
What’s your favourite piece in the room? Have you included any family heirlooms?
I love the light that Chet’s nursery gets in the morning. It frames the cot and shelf perfectly. Chet has a brass cup passed down from his Nanna and Poppy that my husband used to drink from as a child.
What does Chet love most about his room?
Chet’s favourite part of his room at the moment is the leather tabs on the dresser and the rocking chair…the simplest entertainment for a 10 month old! He also enjoys taking all his toys and books out of his paper storage bags.
What are your top tips on creating this style of nursery?
Keep things simple and clutter free. Storage bags house so many toys that can be hidden away quickly. Chet also has a cheap Ikea bookcase hidden in his wardrobe to add extra storage, so the room itself is clean and beautiful. You can also find some great, inexpensive decor at stores like Kmart and Cotton On Kids.
Did you face any challenges while creating this space?
The main challenges I faced were finding the large furniture items, as there isn’t a great deal to choose from in Perth. I’m happy with the result, but it took me a long time to source something I liked.
