The ’80s. When rollerskates ruled and your ra-ra dress was all the colours of the rainbow. For the September issue of CHILD Mags we took inspiration from ’80s birthday parties we knew and loved to recreate a Socks and Skates Birthday Party our kids couldn’t wait to be invited to.
Remember the excitement of waking up on a friend’s birthday party day, putting on your party clothes and counting down the hours?
Back then, the theme was usually just ‘birthday party’. Fancy parties might have been at a roller rink or fast food place, but usually the festivities were in the backyard at home. And you always wanted to be besties with the birthday kid.
Fresh, homemade cakes were a thing.
Tennis shorts and voluminous knit jumpers were fun and practical for girls and boys. Zoe and Finn (above) rocked their pastels and summoned the courage to try out their skates in the street. In the ’80s we would’ve just let ourselves out of the house and tried our luck. On this day there were at least five grown-ups standing at the ready.
My first sunnies were white plastic aviators that my mum bought for me in 1985. I’d question if aviators ever really went out of fashion. And who didn’t love a sequin? We’re delighted they’ve come back. These red and gold panels add patches of playful glam to Alice’s pink tracksuit top and remind us of roller discos.
The series of pictures of Alice, Scarlett and Zoe hanging out on the steps was the CHILD Mags team’s fave. Apart from the fabulous candy-coloured outfits, a chorus of “Pebblecrete!” rang out when we saw this shot. What ’80s child was not intimately familiar with this ubiquitous surface?
All the kids wanted to take their amazing rollerskates home, but these ones are for you! Pop back at 3pm this arvo – we’re giving away the five pairs of gorgeous Kandy rollerskates from Skatescool as seen in the shoot.
Be sure to pick up the September issue of CHILD Mags to see the Socks and Skates Birthday Party feature in print.
