We get to share lots of beautiful stories here at CHILD, some are inspirational, some are interesting, lots are entertaining but every so often we come across one that is more than all of those things combined.
Sometimes we have the pleasure to share stories that NEED to be shared, stories that are a privilege to write and have a message so important we want to shout it from the rooftops.
Redefining Beauty with Lizzie Velasquez, by Melissa Cowan, appeared on Childmags.com earlier this month and it is the latter. It outlines one woman’s experiences with self image, health issues and cyber bullying and as a woman and parent, it touched me so deeply that I really wanted to share it with you guys, our lovely blog readers.
Just before I read the article, I was trying to figure out how to lose five kilos before my friend’s wedding next week. After I read it, I was trying to figure out how to teach my children about acceptance and compassion for all people, including themselves. I was planning how I would educate them on cyber bullying and help them build resilience.
But most of all, after reading it, I was grateful that we have people like Lizzy who are willing to tell their stories in the hope of changing someone else’s.
