Frontier Journal’s Kerrie-Anne Bennett shows us that less is more in her son Zion’s nursery. Minimal, gender neutral and calming, what’s not to love?
Who lives here?
Our little 5 month old son, Zion River.
How would you describe the style of Zion’s room?
Our home is our little sanctuary, so I wanted to continue this into Zion’s room to make it a really lovely, peaceful space that we would enjoy being in. So I have kept it nice and neutral with touches of greenery.
What’s Zion’s favourite piece in his room?
It’s different at each stage, but he seems to always love the ivy which is hanging above the change table. His mood changes when I place him on there and he can just look up at it. Hopefully he’ll have his mumma’s love of greenery!
What is your favourite piece in the room?
I really love the rug – it’s so soft and brings a nice element into the room. We also love that Bob Marley song ‘Iron, Lion, Zion’ so we hunted down an artwork of a lion. I love how the lion is looking down over the crib.
Was there any handmade or DIY touches made in Zion’s space?
Yes, my aunty knitted some beautiful little toys for Zion and I made the feather mobile.
Were there any challenges faced creating this beautiful abode?
No real challenges. We had it all pretty much ready before we had Zion, and since we didn’t know the sex of the baby, we just made sure everything was gender-neutral.
Any tips for creating a calming space like this?
Less is more? And always add plants!
What plants feature in Zion’s room?
We used a fiddle leaf fig and some ivy.
Best cost-cutting tip?
Check out Gumtree! Or hand-me-downs from friends. We got the crib as a hand-me-down from a friend and scored the chair on Gumtree.
